On the desert planet of Diadasos, Olun, a young nomad, dutifully accepts her fate as a noble sacrifice to the Dark Goddess in order to save the lives of her plague-ravaged clan. But when the Dark Goddess would rather see her as a bride to a disfigured and crippled stranger instead, Olun struggles to understand why. Why was she saved? Why must she live the remainder of her life in a village of exiles? Why were her childhood memories of her time there taken from her? As Olun struggles to adjust to her new life and arranged marriage, she begins to have visions of another like her and a cycle of pain and sacrifice that has lasted for centuries. When history threatens to repeat itself, Olun must call upon the missing memories of her childhood, the wisdom of her broken mate, and a spirit on the run from the Dark Goddess to break the cycle before her death can start it anew.
The planet of Diadasos was something I came up with years ago in college, beginning with the story of the Diadasi, Nura, and the human pilot, Royce. This futuristic Diadasos was a lot different from Olun's Diadasos. For starters, Nura and Royce live in cities. As I explored Nura's Diadasos, I gave her nomad friends that told her about the world outside of her city of Casimir. I found these nomad characters interesting and, years later, came up with The Path of the Cave Stars in an attempt to explore the world of Diadasos from the POV of a nomad in the far past, before humans colonized, and Casimir was a metropolis.
Until the addition of Canva Text-To-Image app, I collected various pictures of how I envisioned Olun's Diadasos to look. Saharan Africa, Egypt, the mountain homes of Cappadocia, Turkey. I don't plan to distribute these images. They, like the playlist above and my folder of Google images, are part of my world building process as I continue to build Diadasos. |
